Population Council Research that makes a difference

Niranjan Saggurti, Ph.D.

Associate

Niranjan Saggurti is an associate with the Population Council's HIV and AIDS program. He is a demographer and biostatistician with extensive HIV and intervention research expertise as principal investigator. Prior to working for the Council, Saggurti taught at the International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS), Mumbai.

Saggurti received his master's degree in statistics from Nagarjuna University, a master's in population studies with a specialization in statistics from IIPS, and his doctorate in population studies from IIPS.

Saggurti is a principal investigator on a four-year (2005–09) research project examining HIV risk among Indian migrant men, funded by Avahan, the India AIDS initiative of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Saggurti also works on several existing NIH-funded research projects, including two separate behavioral intervention efficacy studies; the first focuses on evaluating a community-based HIV intervention for married men in the slums of Mumbai (2002–08), and the second involves evaluating a couples-based HIV intervention to reduce HIV risk among wives in India (2008–13). Recently Saggurti and his collaborators were awarded a grant from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development to work on gender-equity focused, male-centered family planning promotion in rural India (2009–13).

Saggurti has authored over 20 peer-reviewed professional journal articles focused on HIV, sexual health, alcohol, tuberculosis, and maternal and child health services.
