Population Council Research that makes a difference

Placide Tapsoba, M.D.

Senior Associate & Country Director

Placide Tapsoba, M.D., M.P.H. is a native of Burkina Faso. He is director of the Population Council's office in Ghana and a senior associate with the Council's Reproductive Health program. Tapsoba studied medicine at the University of Padua, Italy, and subsequently earned both a master's in public health and a master's in medical anthropology from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Tapsoba is the director of the Council’s Reducing Maternal Mortality and Morbidity (R3M) program in Ghana, a consortium of five international partners working toward achieving Millennium Development Goal 5 by reducing and eliminating maternal mortality and morbidity due to unsafe abortion through reducing unwanted fertility. The nationwide program develops the capacity of training institutions and healthcare providers and increases access to family planning, long-term and permanent contraceptive methods, and comprehensive abortion care. The program is the first of its kind and works with the public sector in Ghana as well as the private sector.

Throughout his career, Tapsoba has addressed sensitive public health issues in very traditional African settings. In the late 1980s, he worked with religious leaders (predominantly imams) in West Africa to promote family planning services, a very innovative approach at the time. In the early 1990s, Tapsoba pioneered postabortion care (PAC) services in francophone Africa and ultimately established the PAC consortium for francophone Africa. He was also instrumental in conducting the first study on men who have sex with men in Africa in Dakar, Senegal, which ultimately was replicated in several settings on the continent.
