Rajib Acharya, Ph.D.

Associate

Rajib Acharya is a senior program officer based in New Delhi, where he manages and conducts research on young people’s life transitions and sexual and reproductive health and behavior. Currently he is involved in a multistate study of young people in India, and an intervention research project aiming to build agency among adolescent girls and delay their marriage. His forthcoming studies include provider perspective on medical abortion in India and the factors and consequences of physical and sexual violence on women's health.

Acharya holds a Ph.D. in population studies from the International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS) in Mumbai, India, and master's degrees in statistics from the University of Calcutta and in population studies from the IIPS, Mumbai. He was also awarded a postdoctoral fellowship by the Bill and Melinda Gates Institute of Reproductive Health, Johns Hopkins University, to work on aspects of quality of health care in India and measurement of unintended pregnancy.

Investigating Provider-level Factors Facilitating and Impeding Women's Access to Medical Abortion in India (more)
A Council study in India found that although medical abortion is provided by both certified and uncertified providers, awareness of the method is limited, national guidelines are not necessarily followed, and attitudes about expanding the provider base to include midlevel providers are generally unfavorable.
