Population Council Research that makes a difference

Sarah Engebretsen

Staff Associate

Sarah Engebretsen, staff associate in the Poverty, Gender, and Youth program, joined the Population Council in 2007. Engebretsen specializes in the development and implementation of targeted, evidence-based programs for marginalized and vulnerable adolescent girls in West Africa. She is responsible for program management of adolescent interventions in francophone and anglophone West Africa. Engebretsen has served as a technical advisor to build the capacity of UN agencies, government, and grassroots organizations in developing demand-driven programs that are responsive to the empirical evidence on adolescent girls.

Prior to coming to the Council, Engebretsen worked at the HIV Center for Clinical and Behavioral Studies on contraceptive research and spent time in South Africa analyzing data for a female condom initiative with university students. She completed Teach for America where she managed the academic performance of 30 students in an under-resourced school and wrote proposals to gain funding for additional resources.

Engebretsen holds an M.P.H. from Columbia University’s Department of Population and Family Health, where she specialized in reproductive, adolescent, and child health and received the department award for academic excellence.
