Scott Newman
Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer
Scott Newman joined the Population Council in April 2008 as chief financial officer (CFO) and treasurer, making the transition to the Council after 18 years of service in the field dedicated to fighting the HIV/AIDS pandemic. The CFO, who reports to the president and is under the direction of the board of trustees, is responsible for the overall financial strategy and management of the Council’s resources. This includes accounting, budgeting, grants management, cash management and investments, audit, compliance, risk management, and reporting. The CFO is also treasurer of the Council and oversees the finance, accounting, and grants and contracts functions.
Through March 2008 Newman served as the assistant treasurer and vice president for finance and administration at the Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR), the nation’s leading nonprofit organization dedicated to the support of AIDS research, AIDS prevention, treatment education, and the advocacy of sound AIDS-related public policy. He began his career at amfAR in 1994 as the foundation’s controller and assistant treasurer. He was promoted to chief financial officer in 1998, named a vice president in 2000, and promoted to vice president for finance and administration in 2004. During his tenure, he helped bring financial stability and efficiency to the foundation, overseeing the expansion of amfAR’s operating budget and the growth of its reserves to ensure the organization's ongoing financial viability.
Prior to joining amfAR, Newman served as controller for God’s Love We Deliver (GLWD), the nationally known nonprofit organization that provides hot meals to people in the New York City area who are living with HIV and AIDS. While at GLWD, he was an agency representative on the Hudson County HIV Planning Council. Earlier, Newman worked at Prudential-Bache Securities, Chase Manhattan Bank, and Anchor Savings Bank. He has an M.B.A. in finance from Baruch College of the City University of New York and a B.A. in political science from the State University of New York at Binghamton.
Newman was on the board of the National Federation of Nonprofits, and has been a member of the advisory council of the Direct Marketing Association’s Nonprofit Federation, a member of the CFO Affinity Group of the National Health Council, and a member of Gotham City Networking. Currently he is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants' (AICPA) Nonprofit Industry Conference Steering Committee and has served on the advisory panel for the AICPA’s Financial Executive Forum. In 2004, he received the Executive of the Year Award from the New York Chapter of the Institute of Management Accountants.
