Sharif M.I. Hossain

Associate

Sharif Mohammed Ismail Hossain is a senior program officer at the Population Council's Bangladesh country office. He is a medical graduate with a specialization in public health (MBBS, MPH). Hossain designs, implements, supervises, monitors, and evaluates operations research (OR) programs at the Council and has worked at the Council for 17 years. Hossain's areas of expertise include both qualitative and quantitative research on reproductive and sexual health, STIs, HIV and AIDS, family planning, blood banking, gender-based violence, capacity building on operations research, and diarrheal diseases. Prior to joining the Council, Hossain worked for the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B) as a clinical fellow. Hossain has been involved in operations research for 16 years.

Since 2000, Hossain has assisted the director general of family planning, Ministry of Health, Government of Bangladesh, in testing, introducing, and scaling up emergency contraception in the national program. He has provided technical assistance to Nepal's Ministry of Health in introducing emergency contraception in Nepal's family planning program. Hossain also has worked with other public institutes like the National Institute of Population Research and Training (NIPORT) and the Institute of Child and Mother Health (ICMH) to involve men in family planning and providing RTI/STI services to them from health and family welfare centers.

Hossain has worked on the Population Council's capacity-building program in operations research in Asia. He has also been a temporary advisor to WHO on its capacity-building program to teach operations research to program mangers and researchers in Asia. He teaches operations research and provides training on reproductive health, STIs/HIV, emergency contraception, and quantitative and qualitative research methods. Hossain has published several articles, reports, research updates, regional working papers, manuals, and book chapters.

Recently, Hossain has been working with readymade garment workers to explore their awareness of HIV/AIDS and STIs in order to provide work-based interventions using funds from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. In addition, Hossain recently joined the RESPOND team in Bangladesh to implement effective delivery of long-acting and permanent family planning methods in Bangladesh with EngenderHealth.
