Principal Investigator Profile Lydia Altini is the study director and a principal investigator on the Population Council’s Phase 3 Carraguard® clinical trial. Altini established the Empilisweni Centre for Wellness Studies in Gugulethu, Cape Town, now functioning as one of three sites for the trial. Altini was involved in the development of the protocol, case record forms, and standard operating procedures. As a principal investigator, she is responsible for the management of the clinical investigation of Carraguard, as well as the supervision, management, and training of trial staff and the management of clinic operations. Altini’s areas of interest include infectious disease research, particularly HIV and sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention research. She joined the Infectious Disease Epidemiology Unit at the University of Cape Town in 2001 as a research medical officer on the Phase 2 expanded safety, acceptability, and preliminary effectiveness trial of Carraguard before initiating further studies around the feasibility of STI screening programs in Gugulethu. Altini received her MBBCh from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. In 2001 she received a research training fellowship in health sciences from the South Africa Medical Research Council and in 2002 was awarded a Fogarty Visiting Scientist scholarship from the University of California, San Francisco, Center for AIDS Prevention Studies to attend its summer program on the development of interventions to prevent the spread of HIV.
