Ian D. Askew has been with the Population Council since 1990. Before being promoted to director of the Population Council’s Frontiers in Reproductive Health program (FRONTIERS), he managed FRONTIERS in sub-Saharan Africa, where he will remain and continue to serve as head of the Population Council office in Nairobi. Askew has more than two decades of experience in reproductive health operations research in some of the world’s poorest settings. Over the past 16 years, he has lived and worked throughout Africa. He has also conducted studies and provided training in Asia and Latin America.

Askew’s professional interests include integrating reproductive health and HIV and AIDS services; developing and improving the quality of community-based reproductive health services; understanding the causes and consequences of sexual and gender-based violence; and seeking to eliminate female genital mutilation/cutting. Before joining the Population Council, Askew was deputy director at the Institute of Population Studies at the University of Exeter in England, where he earned his doctorate in sociology. He has published over 150 articles and given presentations at conferences and workshops around the world.
