Co-Principal Investigator Profile Alana de Kock was the co-principal investigator of the Population Council's Phase 3 Carraguard® clinical trial at its Gugulethu site, near Cape Town. During the trial, which ran from March 2004 to March 2007, de Kock oversaw the implementation of the socio-behavioral aspects of the trial and the initial implementation process of the trial itself. She worked closely with the principal investigators of the two other South African sites and the Population Council's microbicides team. She evaluated and was instrumental in improving the Phase 3 trial's informed consent process, which helped ensure that participants fully understood the trial and its expectations. During the last few years she has also served as primary or co-investigator on several other HIV-prevention trials, including social and behavioral research. de Kock has worked for nearly a decade on research in connection with the Population Council, beginning in 1999 as coordinator of the Phase 2 trial to assess the safety and acceptability of Carraguard. A native South African, de Kock holds a master of arts degree from the Department of Social Anthropology at the University of Cape Town, where she also undertook her undergraduate studies. de Kock also holds a professional teaching diploma from the Johannesburg College of Education, and has experience in both child and adult education.
