STAFF BIOGRAPHIES
Annabel S. Erulkar, Ph.D.
Senior Associate and Country Director
Annabel S. Erulkar is country director in the Population Council’s
office in Ethiopia and a senior associate with the Council's Poverty,
Gender, and Youth program. Erulkar is a social scientist with over 15
years' experience developing and managing large programs related to
adolescents, HIV and AIDS, and reproductive health; conducting
large-scale research projects; and providing technical assistance
throughout sub-Saharan Africa. She has established Population Council
offices in Ethiopia and Nigeria, as well as substantially expanded
gender and youth program activities in Ethiopia and Kenya. Erulkar has
authored over 30 reports and journal articles related to adolescence in
sub-Saharan Africa, including schooling, livelihoods, gender-based
violence, early marriage, sexual behavior, reproductive health, and
“youth-friendly” services. Prior to joining the Council in 1995, she was
responsible for research and management information systems at the
Family Planning Association of Kenya, the largest nongovernmental family
planning organization in the country. As an expatriate
American/Canadian, she has lived in Africa for 15 years (in Kenya,
Ghana, and Ethiopia) and coordinated large projects in Ethiopia, Ghana,
Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, and Zimbabwe.
Erulkar holds an M.Sc. in population sciences from Harvard University
and a Ph.D. in social statistics from University of Southampton, United
Kingdom. |
