STAFF BIOGRAPHIES
Barbara Friedland
Associate Barbara Friedland, an associate in the
Population Council's HIV and AIDS program, has been integrally involved
in the Council’s microbicides program since 1996, conducting both
clinical and behavioral research. She was a study coordinator for
several clinical trials of Carraguard®, the Council’s candidate
microbicide. Most
recently, Friedland directed the behavioral aspects of the Council’s
Phase 3 efficacy trial of Carraguard. In this role, she was responsible for the
development of informed consent and educational materials, including a
20-minute educational video produced in four languages for the three
South African study sites. Friedland has also collaborated with
colleagues on the development, implementation, and publication of
behavioral research studies in the United States and developing
countries on topics including informed consent in clinical research and
men’s and women’s attitudes toward a potential microbicide. Prior to
joining the Council, she was orchestra manager for the New York
City–based Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and was business affairs and public
relations manager at Open City Films. Friedland currently is a candidate for a
master's in public health at Hunter College of the City University of
New York. A graduate of Douglass College, Rutgers University, she holds
a master's of music in piano performance from the Mason Gross School of
the Arts, Rutgers University. She has also produced several films,
including a documentary entitled From Coercion to Choice: The
Hysterectomy Epidemic in America. |
