Program Associate Profile Nicole A. Haberland has worked at the Population Council since 1996. She conducts intervention and policy research in the areas of adolescents, power in sexual relations, and sexuality and HIV education. She has conducted research on community-based sexual health programs in Asia; in recent years, a primary focus has been on early marriage and on supporting and evaluating social solidarity programs for married girls. Haberland is a co-principal investigator on a multi-year intervention study—the First-Time Parents Project—in Gujarat and West Bengal, India. In both sites the interventions include provision of information; adjustments in existing pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum services; and group formation and social networking activities for married girls. The study make use of a quasi-experimental design and will assess the effects of the intervention on young women’s reproductive health knowledge and practices, partner communication and support, social networks, and agency. Haberland also co-directs the Rethinking Sexuality Education Project, which aims to place a more central emphasis on gender in sexuality and HIV education—that is, a “social studies” approach that integrates information about sexuality and relationships with development of critical thinking skills and thoughtful attention to rights, race/ethnicity, and gender issues. The project is promoting dialogue, developing technical resources, and designing pilot interventions that will test a new approach. Haberland is affiliated with the Population Council’s Poverty, Gender, and Youth program.
