Barbara S. Mensch, Ph.D.
Senior Associate

Profile

Barbara S. Mensch is a senior associate in the Policy Research Division. For the past decade, she has served as a project director for the division’s research on adolescence in developing countries. Her current research focuses on the measurement of sensitive behaviors, especially sexual activity, and transitions to adulthood, in particular marriage, sexual initiation, and schooling. Mensch was a member of the National Academy of Sciences Panel on Transitions to Adulthood in Developing Countries and serves on the board of directors of the Population Association of America. Earlier, she was an associate in the International Programs Division, conducting research worldwide on assessing the quality of care provided by reproductive health and family planning programs. During the 1980s, she was a research scientist at Columbia University’s School of Public Health, conducting research on adolescent pregnancy and drug use.

Mensch received a B.A. in history from Wellesley College, a B.A. and M.A. in social and political sciences from Cambridge University, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in sociology and demography from Princeton University.

Mensch is affiliated with the Population Council's Poverty, Gender, and Youth program.
