Program Associate Profile Saumya RamaRao is a program associate at the Population Council, as well as monitoring and evaluation (M&E) team leader for the Population Council’s FRONTIERS program. RamaRao has more than 15 years' experience in health and is an expert in quality of care, health care financing, and M&E of health and development programs. She has extensive experience designing and implementing service and research programs, as well as providing technical cooperation and support to collaborative sexual and reproductive health projects. She works closely with researchers, Ministry of Health officials, NGOs, service providers, multilateral organizations, and donors in implementing and coordinating pilot projects that aim to improve reproductive health service delivery. She has conducted research in India, Pakistan, Peru, the Philippines, Senegal, Tanzania, and Zambia. RamaRao also participates in ethical oversight and institutional management activities. She is a member of the Council’s Institutional Review Board providing ethical oversight to institutionally developed projects. RamaRao joined the Council in 1994 in New Delhi as a fellow under the Asia and Near East Operations Research (ANE OR/TA) project. She subsequently moved to the New York office in 1997 as a program associate in the International Programs Division. Prior to joining the Council, RamaRao taught and conducted research at the International Institute for Population Sciences in Bombay, India. She received a master’s in econometrics from the University of Madras, India (1984) and a Ph.D. in economics with specialization in demography from the University of Southern California (1990). RamaRao is affiliated with the Population Council’s HIV and AIDS and Reproductive Health programs.
