Associate Profile Marieke van Dijk is a regional associate with the Population Council’s Reproductive Health program in Latin America. She conducts research on several reproductive health issues, including the use of magnesium sulfate for pre-eclampsia and eclampsia, the use of female-controlled barrier methods in the Dominican Republic, abortion and emergency contraception in Mexico, and the quality of care for pregnant HIV-infected women in Mexico.Prior to joining the Population Council, van Dijk served as a consultant to various reproductive health and general public health NGOs and institutions, including Netherlands Leprosy Relief, the Royal Tropical Institute (KIT) in Amsterdam, and the Population Council. Van Dijk is a medical anthropologist and public health physician by training. She is a graduate of the Groningen University and the University of Amsterdam, and her master’s thesis focused on contraceptive use among indigenous populations in Peru.
