Profile

Elof D.B. Johansson was the vice president of the Population Council's Center for Biomedical Research. In addition to overseeing the research staff, he directed the Council's biomedical research agenda. Prior to joining the organization, Johansson was the medical director of Pharmacia-Leiras BV of the Netherlands. He was also the director of research and development for Pharmacia. Johansson previously served as the head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University Hospital in Uppsala, Sweden. He was the founder and chairman of the Family Planning Foundation Uppsala as well. From 1970 to 1988 Johansson was a member of the Council's International Committee for Contraception Research (ICCR), and he later co-chaired the organization.

Johansson has held numerous posts with Swedish medical, educational, and scientific societies and institutions. In addition to earning a medical degree from Uppsala University, he received postgraduate training in physiology at the University of Pittsburgh's School of Medicine with a fellowship from the Population Council.
