Around the world, the Population Council helps save lives by studying global health problems and designing and testing local solutions. In Nkwanta, in northern Ghana, there is a high prevalence of disease, high infant and child mortality, poor maternal health, and high fertility. In addition, reproductive health services are inadequate, more than one-third of children are not immunized, and approximately 25 percent of children under five years of age suffer from severe malnutrition.
The Council is collaborating with corporations, foundations, and individual philanthropists on the Ghana Essential Medicines Initiative, conducting operations research to test strategies for sustaining the supply of essential medicines to communities in Nkwanta, Ghana.
