Population Council Research that makes a difference

Ensuring that women and couples can access an appropriate, affordable, and safe method of contraception is critical if individual reproductive rights are to be supported. Given the high and inequitable levels of unmet need for effective and acceptable contraceptive methods that still exist in many parts of the world, a better understanding is needed of how to increase access to a range of methods so that individuals can realize their reproductive rights and achieve their fertility intentions.

Population Council focus
The Population Council conducts a wide range of research and program-strengthening activities to increase access to contraceptive methods. These include understanding the determinants of decisionmaking around method use, increasing access to new and underutilized methods, improving the quality of method-specific service-delivery procedures, and expanding the choice of contraceptive methods available.

Population Council impact

  • The African Forum on Emergency Contraception, or ECafrique, was established by the Population Council to introduce and mainstream emergency contraception (EC) services. To date, activities have increased access to EC in at least nine countries in sub-Saharan Africa.
  • In Guatemala, India, Mali, and Pakistan, the Council is supporting the USAID-funded Fertility Awareness-Based Methods (FAM) project, a global effort led by the Georgetown University Institute for Reproductive Health to introduce and scale up provision of contraceptive methods based on awareness of fertility.
  • In partnership with EngenderHealth, the Council is contributing to the USAID-funded Responding to the Need for Family Planning through Expanded Contraceptive Choice and Program Services project (RESPOND) by supporting expanded access to long-acting and permanent methods of contraception (LAPMs) globally, with a particular focus on Bangladesh and Kenya.
  • The Council directs the five-year USAID Pakistan bilateral Family Advancement for Life and Health (FALAH) project to increase the use of family planning and birth spacing in Pakistan. Nearly 24,000 women have received free family planning consultations from 1,178 mobile clinics through this project.
