More than two million HIV-infected children—90 percent of whom reside in sub-Saharan Africa—remain unidentified by their local health systems. Children are especially vulnerable to the effects of HIV, and most will die before age five if left untreated. Further, millions of children under the age of 18 have lost one or both parents to AIDS. These children are at increased risk for HIV infection and a multitude of other challenges.
Population Council focus
Operations research conducted by the Council is determining best practices to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV, increase HIV testing for children, and improve access to pediatric care and treatment. We also are generating and promoting utilization of robust evidence on effective program approaches to support orphans and other vulnerable children.
Population Council impact
- In Uganda, the Council evaluated a program to help HIV-positive parents plan for their children’s futures. Based on findings from the evaluation, this program became a UNAIDS "best practice" and has been replicated in many settings.
- A Council project in South Africa is raising awareness of the need for early HIV diagnosis and treatment for children.
- The Council's evaluation of the mothers2mothers program in South Africa provided quantitative evidence of the benefits of peer psychosocial support and contributed to the expansion of the program to several sub-Saharan African countries.

Malawi Schooling and Adolescent Study (more)
This six-round longitudinal study aims to identify critical aspects of school quality that put adolescents who face the dual challenges of poverty and HIV/AIDS on a safer, healthier, and more productive path to adulthood. Our research seeks to uncover those aspects of schooling that will lead to more protective behaviors and lower HIV risk among young men and women.
