Population Council Research that makes a difference

Seven million infants every year die before their first birthday; two-thirds die within the first month after birth. The vast majority of these deaths are in developing countries where access to basic and emergency health care is poor. The principles of essential newborn and infant care include clean cord care, resuscitation, warmth to avoid hypothermia, infection prevention and control, early and exclusive breastfeeding, hygiene, immunization, and support for the mother–infant relationship. Additional care is needed in areas where malaria and/or HIV are endemic.

Population Council focus

The Population Council provides technical support for designing, monitoring, and evaluating programs in which newborn care is integrated within a broader framework of comprehensive maternal and newborn health during the postpartum period.

Population Council impact

    • The Council provides oversight for monitoring and evaluation, including operations research and knowledge management, for the Pakistan Initiative for Mothers and Newborns (PAIMAN), a five-year USAID-funded project led by John Snow, Inc. (JSI) that demonstrates innovations and builds capacity within health systems and communities.
    • In Bolivia, the Council conducted operations research and strengthening monitoring and evaluation systems for the USAID/JSI Health Management and Quality Project, which focuses on strengthening essential health systems necessary for managing delivery and infant and early childhood infections and illnesses.
    • In northern India, the Council is undertaking a landscaping exercise to guide development of a comprehensive behavior change communication and management strategy to shape demand and practices to improve newborn, infant, and child health and nutrition.
    • Council activities in Kenya, South Africa, and Swaziland are seeking to reorganize and strengthen existing postpartum care services so that newborn and maternal health services are fully integrated, and services for HIV-positive mothers and babies are effectively incorporated. In Swaziland, health provider knowledge increased in several areas and the strong PMTCT program maintained a high proportion of women testing for HIV and receiving antiretroviral therapy.
