Population Council Research that makes a difference

Fellowships

The Population Council’s fellowship programs have helped advance the careers of social and biomedical scientists, public health researchers, and program managers throughout the world. The work of Council fellows has fostered research and informed the creation of population, health, and development policies and programs.

We thank the Fred H. Bixby Foundation for a generous grant that enables the Council to offer fellowships to young professionals, primarily from developing countries, to prepare them for leadership in the population, health, and development fields. (The application deadline for this year's Fred H. Bixby Fellowship Program was 31 January 2012.)

Other fellowships include: in India, fellowships to develop leadership skills of individuals working in reproductive health and sexual rights, especially in areas related to young people and to maternal mortality and morbidity; in Pakistan, small-scale grants for research projects in reproductive health that have direct practical relevance to the needs of Pakistan; in Sudan, small grants for individual capacity-building; and in Vietnam, a postdoctoral fellowship program to facilitate research on reproductive health, health service systems, and poverty. A list of Council fellows is available as an addendum to the Population Council's annual report.

Technical assistance/institution building

Since the Council's founding in 1952, the number of requests for advice from developing country leaders has grown considerably. In response, Population Council staff members realized that training and institution building should be added to the organization's portfolio of activities as a means for achieving its mission.

The Council provides technical assistance, offers workshops, and teaches courses for local institutions, donors, as well as governmental and nongovernmental agencies. Investments in training and strengthening capacity ensure that the Population Council can make a continuing contribution to reproductive health and family planning programs and policies.
