A Gender Based Violence Dashboard for Nigeria, Driven Bottom-Up by Communities

When COVID-19 created a “shadow pandemic” of violence against women, the Population Council worked with the government of Nigeria and partners to develop the National Gender Based Violence Dashboard, an innovative central reporting and data visualization platform for real-time tracking of different types and locations of gender-based violence in the country.

The dashboard, a novel, user-friendly platform, collects data at the community, state, and national levels. With validated data from sources across the country, the dashboard enables surveillance and clarifies response options.

As a partner to the United Nations Development Programme on the Spotlight Initiative, Council researchers also set up a situation room, a physical hub embedded within a government ministry to host the data management infrastructure, including collation, analytics, and monitoring.

The Spotlight Initiative is a global multiyear partnership between the European Union and the United Nations to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls by 2030.
