The Population Council congratulates Board member Kaye Wellings for her conferment as a Fellow of the UK Academy of Social Sciences. As a Fellow, Professor Wellings joins a distinguished body of over 1,100 academics and practitioners who have made significant contributions to social science.
The Academy of Social Sciences is dedicated to promoting social science for public benefit and the appointment is a recognition for excellence and outstanding contributions through thought leadership, practical application, or policy development.
Wellings is Professor of Sexual and Reproductive Health Research and Head of the Department of Social and Environmental Health Research at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. A social scientist with a public health perspective, she has worked in sexual and reproductive health research for over 20 years and founded the British National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles (Natsal).
Professor Wellings leads a team of academics researching sexual and reproductive risk behavior and risk reduction practice, including contraception, at national and international levels and has a strong interest in evaluation research, particularly in relation to preventive intervention. She is considered a pioneer in the field and has researched sensitive topics, including not only sexual behavior but also risk practices relating to drug use and in prison populations.
