Jonathan Shakes Joins Population Council Board of Trustees

The Population Council announces the appointment of Jonathan Shakes to the Board of Trustees. Mr. Shakes is an e-commerce logistics consultant, having worked fifteen years in operations, software and product management at Amazon and its subsidiaries.

Mr. Shakes was General Manager of the first Amazon Fulfillment Centers on the East Coast of the U.S. and in France, and is the inventor on numerous patents associated with innovations in the e-commerce logistics field. Mr. Shakes began his career in Beijing, China and Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, as a U.S. Foreign Service Officer, and lived again in China to lead Amazon's parcel delivery operations there. He received a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Swarthmore College and Master of Science in computer science and engineering from the University of Washington. He is married with two children, and lives in Mercer Island, Washington.

In a rapidly changing global environment, Mr. Shakes brings to the Population Council a unique perspective and expertise on the opportunities of technology to address the global health and development challenges ahead. Mr. Shakes joins 16 other Board members at the Population Council, drawing from seven different countries and diverse areas of expertise, including demography, pharmaceutics, economics, education, HIV and AIDS, international law, obstetrics and gynecology, public health and reproductive health.
