The Council addresses FGM/C as a human rights abuse and a contributor to gender inequality. Our FGM/C program advances multidisciplinary and multinational efforts needed to eliminate this harmful practice in many countries. Salma Abou Hussein, who works in the Population Council’s Egypt office, spoke with L’Orient Le Jour about female genital mutilation/cutting in Egypt.
"Doctors feel as though they have a sort of ‘cultural responsibility’ or they know that if they refuse to cut a girl that she will end up being cut by a traditional "exciseuse" (cutter), which will be much more harmful to her."
