NES/T Male Contraceptive Gel

Scientists at the Population Council’s Center for Biomedical Research is developing a novel reversible contraceptive for men. The Nestorone®/Testosterone (NES/T) gel is designed to be absorbed through the skin with minimal side effects.

Here is recent media coverage about the phase two clinical trials of the gel, started in 2018.

Male birth control: A promising new trial in California and why reproductive autonomy matters, Los Angeles Times

“One of the most promising ongoing trials conducted at the Lundquist Institute in Torrance involves a gel that men can apply to their shoulders. The hormonal gel combines both a progestin and testosterone, which together block the body’s signals for producing its own testosterone and sperm. The testosterone in the gel replaces the body’s own testosterone, preventing negative effects on libido, sexual function, muscle mass, and energy.”

“The entire process could take another 10 years, but [Diana] Blithe says the real-life feedback that’s been pouring in has immense value: “The response from men has been, ‘We wish we could continue to use it. When is it going to be available?’” she says. “And the women are saying, ‘I really don’t want to go back on my method. I liked it when he was taking it.’”

What the hell is going on with male birth control, Jezebel

“Christina Wang, MD, an expert on contraceptives at The Lundquist Institute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, is the lead investigator on the clinical trials for the hormonal gel. The shorthand name is NES/T, as it’s a combination of nesterone to block the production of natural testosterone in the testes and bring down sperm count low enough to prevent pregnancy, and replacement testosterone to maintain sex drive. “It is a big relief for the women, [especially] for those that have tried one, two, three or four different types of contraception,” she told Jezebel. Dr. Wang said there have been no pregnancies so far and some couples like the gel so much they wanted to know where they could get it.”
