Population Council Fellow: Cuong La

Dr. Cuong La was a recipient of the Population Council’s Ford Fellowship in Vietnam, which provided international, Master’s-level training to early career Vietnamese health professionals in public health and social sciences.

Dr. La has gone on to become one of the pioneering scholars of gender and sexuality in Vietnam, contributing to HIV and AIDS policy and advocacy over the last decade with a focus on the sexual and reproductive health of men, including gay men and male migrant workers.

While subsequently pursuing his PhD in sexualities and masculinities in Australia, he continued to promote and protect the health and well-being of marginalized populations, particularly refugees, migrants, asylum seekers, and survivors of domestic violence. He also advised federal and state governments on the prevention of violence against women. Today, Dr. La is an Adjunct Research Fellow at La Trobe University and the Research and Policy Leader at the Spiritual Health Association in Australia.
