Timothy Abuya

Timothy Abuya is an Associate I in the Reproductive Health Program based in Nairobi, Kenya. He has over 15 years’ research experience in Health Systems Research. Abuya’s expertise revolves around the use of social science research methods and implementation research to evaluate public health interventions using mixed methods with a focus of utilization of policy analysis techniques. Abuya has worked in Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Mali, and Tanzania.

Currently, Abuya manages several projects in multiple countries. In Kenya, he provides technical oversight to three projects: Scaling Up Treatment Guidelines in Kenya Through Building Confidence in the Management of Sepsis in Young Infants in Four Kenyan Counties; a consortium-led project with Jacaranda Health titled Kuboresha Afya Mitaani, which aims to improve Maternal, Newborn, & Child Health (MNCH) outcomes for vulnerable women and newborns in informal settlements in Nairobi; and a project that seeks to explore institutional bottlenecks, contextual barriers, and opportunities on experience of care for newborns, infants, and young children up to two years of age in two counties of Kenya. He also provides technical expertise for Frontline Health: Harmonizing Metrics, Advancing Evidence – a project that is advancing community health systems metrics, monitoring, and learning to improve the efficiency and performance of community health worker programs in seven high-priority countries.

Abuya has published over 36 articles on various topics related to health systems, with a particular focus on access and implementation of public health programs. He earned his PhD in Public Health from The Open University in the United Kingdom and Witwatersrand University in South Africa, and holds a Master’s Degree in Public Health from Kenyatta University.
